The Only Thing is about a forbidden love between two people who are simultaneously shielding each other from the world. From an abusive partner, from outside pressures and dangers. They risk it all for each other, well aware of what may happen if the truth comes out. Musically it feels like a constant lift, an ever-growing swell into a flight to the stars. The undercurrent is treacherous, with a growling synth bass and heavy kick pushing the track forward, but the chorus opens up into a pool of blissfully oblivious love.
